EMDR Therapy: Heal From Trauma, Anxiety & Distressing Life Experiences

Traumatic experiences, painful memories, anxiety, and negative beliefs about yourself don't have to define your future. If you've tried talking about your experiences but still feel emotionally stuck, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) may help your brain process those memories in a new way.

At Julie Zubryd Counseling, LLC, I provide EMDR therapy for adults throughout Pennsylvania through both in-person sessions in Robinson Township and secure telehealth when clinically appropriate. My goal is to help you move beyond surviving so you can begin truly living.

What Is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach developed to help people process traumatic and distressing memories that continue to affect their lives today.

Rather than focusing on repeatedly talking through painful experiences, EMDR helps your brain reprocess memories so they become less emotionally overwhelming. During treatment, you'll briefly recall aspects of a memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, alternating taps, or auditory tones. Over time, the memory often becomes less distressing, allowing you to respond to it with greater calm and perspective.

EMDR is recognized as an effective treatment for trauma by numerous professional organizations and has helped millions of people worldwide.

What Can EMDR Help Treat?

Although EMDR is best known for treating trauma and PTSD, research has shown it can also help with many other concerns, including:

  • Trauma and PTSD

  • Childhood trauma

  • Anxiety disorders

  • Panic attacks

  • Phobias

  • Distressing life experiences

  • Low self-esteem

  • Performance anxiety

  • Grief and loss

  • Medical trauma

  • First responder trauma

  • Relationship trauma

  • Negative self-beliefs

  • Stress related to significant life events

Not everyone seeking EMDR has experienced a single major traumatic event. Sometimes years of smaller experiences, chronic stress, or emotionally painful relationships leave lasting effects that EMDR can address.

How Does EMDR Therapy Work?

EMDR therapy follows an eight-phase treatment model designed to help you process memories safely and effectively.

Treatment typically includes:

  • Learning coping and grounding skills

  • Identifying memories and negative beliefs connected to current symptoms

  • Processing those memories using bilateral stimulation

  • Strengthening healthier, more adaptive beliefs

  • Reducing emotional distress connected to past experiences

  • Helping your nervous system respond more calmly in the present

You remain awake, aware, and in control throughout every session. EMDR is not hypnosis, and you will never be forced to discuss anything before you feel ready.

What Is Bilateral Stimulation?

Bilateral stimulation refers to gentle, alternating stimulation of both sides of the brain. This may include:

  • Guided eye movements

  • Hand-held tappers

  • Alternating taps

  • Alternating auditory tones

Researchers believe this process helps the brain organize and integrate distressing memories more effectively, allowing emotional healing to occur.

Is EMDR Right for Me?

EMDR may be appropriate if you:

  • Feel emotionally "stuck"

  • Continue reacting to events that happened months or years ago

  • Experience intrusive memories or nightmares

  • Avoid reminders of painful experiences

  • Struggle with anxiety connected to past events

  • Feel intense shame or self-blame

  • Notice recurring negative beliefs about yourself

  • Want to move beyond simply managing symptoms

Every client is different. During your initial sessions, we'll determine together whether EMDR is an appropriate approach based on your history, current symptoms, and treatment goals.

What to Expect During EMDR Therapy

Before beginning memory processing, we'll spend time building trust and ensuring you have effective coping skills.

Your treatment may include:

  • A comprehensive assessment

  • Learning grounding and relaxation techniques

  • Developing emotional regulation skills

  • Identifying treatment targets

  • EMDR processing sessions

  • Regular reevaluation of progress

  • Ongoing support and integration

The pace of treatment is individualized. Some clients notice meaningful improvement in just a few sessions, while others benefit from longer-term work depending on the complexity of their experiences.

Common Questions About EMDR

Will I Have to Relive My Trauma?

No. While you'll briefly think about difficult memories, the goal is not to repeatedly relive them. EMDR helps reduce the emotional intensity attached to those memories over time.

Is EMDR Safe?

When provided by a trained clinician, EMDR is considered a safe, evidence-based treatment. We spend time preparing for processing to ensure you have the coping skills needed throughout treatment.

Can EMDR Be Done Virtually?

In many cases, yes. Depending on your needs and clinical presentation, EMDR can often be adapted for secure telehealth sessions.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

Treatment length varies depending on your goals, symptom severity, and the number of memories being processed. During your assessment, we'll discuss what treatment may look like for your unique situation.
